saw the weirdest thing, cathay a330 in YVR

i saw a cathay a330 taxing on friday at YVR. This is quite troubling to me (and my cadet interview prep) because I know the 330 isn't used on HKG-YVR. it doesn't even have the range!

does anyone know why and how on earth did it get there?

cheers!
E

I heard a rumor that they took-off, got half way across the pacific, realized they were flying a 330 and didnt have the range, then using their brilliant CX training skills, turned back and landed safely in YVR.

See what you have to look forward to cadet

Here's what I think, if the payload is light, it can still fly all the way to there without having to stop over...

And, I doubt it was a passenger flight anyway.

I wonder if it was that CX A330 I was vectoring 2 years ago and forgot about.

It's okay, I remember now, that was a KA A330.

Cool

Even more troubling is that the 888/0 was operated by a 744 and the 838 by a 340-300 B-HXC and neither of those come with 2 engines. I think you need to get your vision tested!!

I'm not confirming it was in YVR but a lightly loaded (read empty) A330 could easily fly HKG/YVR and the return leg has many options such as ANC or TPE among many others as a tech stop on way to HKG.

ok buy why would they deadhead a plane across the pacifc using a plane that shouldnt be able to make it back across without stops... thats a really expensive way or using inappropriate resources.... where as the 777ER which they just purchased can make it...
so... why not?
besides unless you flew on it, im guessing you saw it from afar which then begs the question how sure are you if so what else did you see that confirms so? i mean this is all meant without any offence at the risk of sounding so... but i cant say anything for sure as i wasnt there...

Energie,
Did you see the 330 take off or land?
If not, you have just witnessed one of CX's top secret Airbus taxi tests. They fold up the airplane, stuff it into a freighter, fly to some unsuspecting airport and taxi it around. Since they were the launch customer for the 330 Airbus requires these kinds of tests once in a while to verify data.

B-HLA visited YVR in CX colours during its route proving (in late 94 I think) and it flew HKG - YVR non-stop. It was outside the Haeco hangar 4 at Kai Tak for the party for the unveilling of the then new (current) CX livery with newly painted 744 B-HOR in the hangar and one of the leased PAL A340-200's plus HLA wearing French registration outside. Around 10pm HLA pushed back and departed non-stop to YVR on its way back to Toulouse. It could be argued it still belonged to Airbus at the time but it was in CX livery.
