DESO Interview Aug 14-17 NYC

Here's an outline of my interview experience. Tried to remember all the details, but as you know, that is almost impossible. The process is standard as per previous reports. Show up for the written exam followed by the HR/Tech interview.

WRITTEN TEST: I would say 75% of it were basic stuff. I didn't recognize any from the Capt XYZ book. Some of the subjects covered:
  • Great circle track that crosses the meridians at 90 deg. (rhumb line?)
  • Veering winds
  • Cyclones and Anticyclones. Their rotation and rate of movement
  • Groundlooping tendencies of tricycle airplanes vs taildraggers
  • Relationship of CAS, EAS, TAS, MN during climbs and descents
  • Cloud formation. (convection, advection, orographic, convergence)
  • How does flaps (beyond the normal t/o setting) affect the different segments of climb.
  • Friese ailerons
  • Movement of center of pressure during icing and high speed flight.
  • Calculate true altitude (based on OAT, field elev, QNH)
That's all I can remember from the test. Hope that helps.

INTERVIEW: Conducted by two gentlemen (I think both were pilots). Both were very nice and made me feel comfortable. They explained how the interview will be conducted and gave a short briefing on when to expect phase 2 and possible start date.

HR: Warm up questions included things from my application ie. my background, education, work experience, and personal life (hobbies etc). So, make sure you study what's on your application/resume and be able to answer any questions about it. Don't be surprised if the interviewer knew a lot about you. That part took about 15 minutes. The next set of questions were:
  • Why CX?
  • Questions on the annual and interim report. (profit/loss)
  • Aircraft on order
  • Where does CX fly in North America?
  • Have you been to HK?
  • What is the population of HK?
  • What is the cost of living in HK compared to SFO?
  • What does your wife think about moving to HK?
  • Would an inexperienced flight instructor make a good instructor compared to an experienced one?
  • What do you think makes a good captain?
  • How did you prepare for the interview?
  • What would you do if not successful?
  • Any applications with other airlines?
  • Do you know anyone in CX or have gone through the interview? If so, what did they think?
Tech: Started with type specific questions (MTOW, MLW, O2 requirements, describe the engine, what is a free power turbine, critical engine).
  • How is the critical engine determined?
  • Define Vmcg. Effect of CG on Vmcg. Its relationship to V1.
  • Why is there a big difference between V1 & Vr on the 744 compared to your aircraft?
  • What is ASDA? TORA?
  • Define clearway. Can it be overwater? What if there's a cruise ship at the end of the runway?
  • You lose an engine after V1. Would you continue the t/o with 7000 ft runway remaining?
  • Why does the 744 have sweep wings?
  • How does sweep allow a higher Mcrit?
  • Disadvantages of sweep wings?
  • Explain dutch roll. (Be very detailed on this one. He wanted to know the effects of lateral, directional, and spiral stability)
  • 33000 OAT -45C. What is the ISA deviation?
  • 2 aircraft. 1 at FL 350 and the other at FL 390. Which one has the higher TAS? What if there's an inversion?
  • Shown a hand drawn map of HK and 2 tracks of a typhoon's typical line of advance. Which track will produce the most adverse wx? After you pick one. Which position on that track will it has the most effect on HK airport. What kind of wx conditions would you expect at HK airport?
That's it! Pretty straightforward...no surprises. I was asked if I had any questions ( I had a few prepared), then off I went. 1 hr and 40 mins start to finish. Great experience overall. For me, the two interviewers made the difference because of their professionalism and demeanor. Best of luck to you all!
