DEFO Pay Changes

A number of threads have commented on current pay negotiations that may result in a reduction in starter pay for freighter DEFOs. Can anyone provide any informed comment on what is actually being considered, specifically, whether it affects all DEFO bases and when it is actually due to come into effect. FYI I thought that the salary reduction was only being considered for DEFO on the pax fleet ie they would join initially on the same pay scale as their peers on the freighter fleet. Am I wide of the mark?

The pay for DEFO in the freighter would actually go up, except for 4th year, which would dip marginally below current 4th year freighter scale in North America. The only positions that would suffer a paycut are the 1-3 year pax FO (which doesn't excist, hence the proprosal by cathay when they begin hiring directly into the pax fleet) and the 4-year and onwards BASED pax FOs. They would see the most substantial paycut in North America. Some bases would actually see a marginal rise.

But, nothing has been heard so far. Hopefully the company will realize that it isn't gonna be good for recriutment to cut pay when the company is making such good profits. Not to mention it is already below standard when compared to other airlines operating similar equipment in North America. Then again, that is my optimistic side speaking.

It is ludicrous for Cathay to think of lowering salaries at this stage, but management have the approach that "people aren't leaving so stick it to them...".

The new basings policy will also mean that current freighter FOs will not get an automatic transfer to the Pax fleet at the end of year three on the line - rather it will be a six to twelve month wait before the big bucks come your way on the Pax fleet. Well done 3rd floor, another successful moral booster...

The training department can produce about 220 pilots per year at best and there are 40 retirements per year or so... with one aircraft per month arriving from autumn this year they cannot afford to lose people, unfortunately, they are going to start experiencing just that...

CX is now an okay job at best, and that's being optimistic. Factor in the fact that no one there is really happy with their lot, the chop department (or rather training department as it likes to be called) actually intimidating people away from taking Command courses, and there isn't a whole lot going for this job. And then there's Dragonair.....
