commuting to work.

Could any of you NA freight pilots help me out with this one? I live in chicago and would hope to be based there, but if I end up in ANC or LAX or any other base, how do guys commute to work. I was told at my intrview that CX pilots can not jump seat on company freight aircraft for insurance reasons. I have always lived out of base and jump seated to work since flying in the USA. Do people buy ID 90% on other carriers? I am sure not everyone in the US has moved to their base.
Thanks in advance
Adrian.
