S/O to JFO is currently 3 ½ years. It will come down with the expansion that is currently underway but there is a bottleneck because of not enough trainers and the lack of recruiting after 911 and SARS. Current time to command from joining the company is about ten years.
As for the time to be able to bid for a Canadian base. 3 ½ years as an S/O + 1 year as a JFO + ½ year to CCQ back onto the A340. In all 5 years minimum from date of joining and that is assuming there is a slot available and you aren’t out bit by a more senior crew member. Nothing is guaranteed remember and of course this is assuming that you do your upgrade on the A330/340. If you do your upgrade on the B777, it could take considerably longer as you will have to transfer over/back to the B744. As a general rule if you are an S/O on the bus you will stay on it for your upgrade. If you are on the B744, you will get the B777.

Thanks much folks.
I appreciate the replies, gives me a good ball-park figure to think about. (even if it took 15 years to get back to Canada I would still want the job!!!)

Things in aviation are very cyclical. Just over three years ago we didn’t know 911 or SARS were just around the corner. It will eventually come down. The limiting factor now is the training machine.
