Why CX has difficulty recruiting local cadet pilots?

Sitowa2001 and middlepath, it has nothing to do with skin colour or any orther xenophobic alarmist theories that you care to put forth. Simple fact of high standards required by both applicant and company for a major long term investment.
As an aside, applicants to the NASA program are usually prior Test pilot school graduates hence the "short" 6 years to train to lofty heights. Compare those attributes to your exalted ability to type inuendo on a keyboard and I guess you come up short.
Hey, maybe you think playing the race card under such times of industrial turmiol will gain you new friends and respect...perhaps even advancement....loser!

I can see how high the standards are and I can see what the company has nurtured - a bunch of selfish greedy aircrew.
By the way, Shuttle drivers/crew are not all former test pilots. Please spend sometime in learning the outside world. Life is not only about money and day off.

Again, I am not leaning on the race issue. But can anybody from CX explain to me why it takes much...much....much...longer for the CX cadets (whom used to be mostly locals) than their mates that trained and started off with the same qualifications but are now the skippers of SPEEDBIRD. ARE You Suggesting CX has a much higher standard than the "World's favourate Airlines"?

Here's the deal with local pilots. CX benfits from both sides by hiring these guys. They look good in the eyes of the govt because they are giving something to the community and they also reap the benefit from the relatively cheap cost of training and paying these so called locally employed pilots (LEP's). Do the math. These blokes get the same pay as expat SO's but they wait 3 years for JFO upgrade and they get bugger all in the way of housing, education, or any other allowances. Cheap? I think so.
As for getting the candidates. Look at the life and expectation in Hong Kong. People want jobs that are "prestigeous" and that are going to give you a fat check and a BMW. ie. Accountancy, banking, lawyer. Have a look out of your taxi window next time you're in Central, that's why they can't get the applicants. Also, most who have the dream of flying have already buggered off to do it elsewhere as there is no other feeder for flying in HK. No GA, no airforce, nothing.

Roughly 400 million people on this planet speak English as their mother tongue. That's roughly 7% of the 6 billion on this rock. And yet English is THE DOMINANT LANGUAGE of science, commerce, and of course aviation. Perhaps the sun has set on the British Empire but in its place has emerged the English Empire.

I must say that I am desperate to become a pilot, and more specifically, really want to get into CX's (or KA's) programme.
Having read the replies above, I think I more or less satisfy most of the criteria: I'm a HK resident, Eurasian, eduated partly in Britain, and really really eager to fly.
However, my problem is that I am shortsighted (much wose than the 20/100 limit quoted). I'm really willing to do anything to fly, even if it is Lasik eye surgery. But is this procedure OK with Cathay?
Please can someone help. I'm really desperate!! Please tell me what to do.

For people getting their own CPL/IR, ATPL, are there any eyesight requirements, or should I do the lasik in order to get them? How much will it cost to get my own CPL/IR, ATPL?
What are CX's requirements for direct entry S/O in terms of eyesight? Is lasik acceptable for this?
