fish Cathay or not Cathay

Looking for some balanced opinions.
Am in the process of going thru the Cathay interviewing process.Have got thru the first one,am presently flying a jet, earning good coin. Was thinking that Cathay was going to be the berries as it would allow a home basing back in Oz in a few years and a ten year wait to Command, along with all the other benefits of working for a Major.
Where I am working presently,it looks like it will be two years for a Command.
Just wondering if any of you chaps might have some input. All replies appreciated.

Cathay is in no way a "major" I'm afraid. My advice stay put, this is a very very unhappy company.

I realise that all is not well in Cathay at the moment and have not been for some time.
But where else can you work as an expat and realise the same earning potential as is possible at Cathay after 5 10 15 years.
You guys must surely hold some hope for the continued actions of you and your colleagues.
Besides living in the heat and dust(where the money does not increase as well as it does in Cathay-with an F/O in Cathay earning more than a Captain in Emirates) there don't seem to be too many expat jet jobs out there with a career offering. What are the realities of an outbasing for someone who waits there turn?

Hey Gerry,

I am not a pilot but I will just ask a couple of questions. DO YOU prefer Hong Kong or Oz? It is just up to you to find out what you want.
Everything we see we will never understand till we actually feel it, so it is up to your own judgement.

Hope I have not been blunt.

Copied from your post on African Aviation...my two cents (less 30%) worth:

Bear in mind that at CX at present we are blessed with a management totally lacking in integrity. What this means is a life under constant attack from above, with serious and continued attacks on conditions of service, schedules, salaries, contracts and the like. The latest fiascos are a "absentee management program" (see the FH forum) that is, by it's pure stupidity, putting our AOC under threat, and the recuitment of F/O's from Malaysia at another, lower, "D" scale. To put this in perspective, there are presently 17 (yes, SEVENTEEN) different contracts in CX.
There is going to be a big fight soon. Don't come if you haven't got the balls for it (some ex AN and AustAir blokes haven't).
Apart from that, it could be fun, but be prepared to wait 13 - 18 years for a command.
Still interested?

Thumbs up

Smallwing,
In short "no" I do not prefer Hong Kong to the Antipodes, but I am living in Asia and am looking for a job that will get me home eventually. That really is the whole idea.

Hello again Gerry,

Things are tight right now, but I can positively tell you that if you do come to CX, you will be among a company of good guys and girls to hang around with. I know.

Aside from that, I do enjoy drinking and stuff in Hong Kong!

Hope you get what you want, as I know the decision can be hard. But all the best to you.

Gerry me old mate,

Well, there is some truth in what has been posted. But it always pays to take it with a grain of salt.

Things are only as bad as you let them be.

It will be nice when all the negotiations are over and hopefully we will all be better off for it.

But what it comes down to is your personal choice. Which is often the hardest decision of all.

And to answer one of your questions. Basing are possible for both F/o's and Captains. The location of the base does depend on the fleet you are on.

Well keep the 2 holer smoking.

well,it does look like things are heating up over there in the next week or so.Assuming that the your actions are rewarded.
How better off will you be?
If you joined tomorrow,at market forces, how long before you get to the left seat?
Is what recruitment say remotely plausible and is the ten year plan realistic?
Of the seventeen contracts, how many of those are scab contracts?
Cheers big kahuna and the smokey two holer.

Gerry,
At the moment the guys doing their command have been here 10 years. Suspect it will be more like 15 years for new joiners.
Regarding the basing in Oz, I don't think your chances are very good for many years to come unless you don't mind being stuck on the freighter forever.
If you joined today you would have approximately 500 Aussies in front of you and with only limited slots available it would take a while.
