midair collision
During the Newcastle V. Olympic soccer an anouncement that two light aircraft collided over Sydney. One crashed in a suburban street and the other near bankstown airport.

Just heard on Ch10 (Melb) that there are 4 deceased at the suburban street site. They did not indicate if they were from the A/C or on the ground.

The ambulance service said two planes, believed to be light aircraft, collided near Bankstown airport shortly after 3.30pm (AEST).
One plane had managed to land safely at the airport, while the other had crashed into Violet Street, Revesby, she said.

One of the aircraft made it back and landed about half way down 29L (runway direction 11 at the time), saw it surrounded by emergency vehicles this afternoon, but was too far away to see rego etc.

Saw the collision from the back of a cab on the M5. The two aircraft apperared to converge at a shallow angle, both in level flight. One rolled rapidly on to it's back and went straight down. The other continued on in level flight.

Am really p***ed of with the S**t that the media come up with. While all of us are coming to grips with another tragic loss of one of our fellow aviators these pricks are w***ing on about closing down the airport. When will these C**ts get into the F*****g real world and leave us alone.

Sincere condolences to all affected. This one's close to home.
That sick in the stomach feeling got me again this arvo when the news came through.
The CH7 report had the usual 'student pilots train in this area on weekends' crap and that there was another midair back in 1974.

The tail of the aircraft had a dirty big tyre print in it. Where it fell to the ground, there was also bits of fibreglass and unfortunatley, bits of the interior. Believe the aircraft then crashed into a factory.

I don't think I've ever read an article about a car prang with as much inappropriate detail as in the SMH article about the accident.

Police on site when requested by the VKG operator called in the rego of the Tobago at BK as JTV. Unless the police got it wrong, but they do know their phonetic alphabetic.

Ninemsn reported the Tobago as a 'Tambigo' and when referring to the Hoxton Park circuit crash a few years back (they quoted it as 4 years ago but I'm sure it wasn't that long ago), referred to the ... circuit area of the aircraft!!!

Bindook, thanks for the analysis on what Aminta said, but sometimes the controllers do take an active interest in VFR aircraft separation. As she said, "...and they haven't been separated by air traffic controllers." That means that the ATC haven't seperated them. She never said that they shouldn't be separated by ATC. Maybe she is trying to highlight a point- The infrastructure at bankstown didn't alert them to alert the pilot.
A simple latent failure- or the neglect of a running down airport?
Shouldn't Bankstown have a radar (it does
; a radar screen is in the tower if you go up and have a look. It piggy-backs sydney's)? Shouldn't bankstown's controllers have an aircraft proximity warning alarm? There is one at Sydney- I think!
