"Google SketchUp (free) is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program whose few simple tools enable you to create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects – even space ships. You can add details, textures and glass to your models, design with dimensional accuracy, and place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp (free) is a great way to discover if 3D modeling is right for you."

Tks for the effort @hris.
How long did it take you to put that list together? Was the TV broken? Quiet a few in there that I can use.

Pretty impressive list there @hris, good job.

I'm a little bit raw - is there any thing in there that would help me to write a pretty basic spreadsheet (log book) type program for the Symbian OS?

Cheers.

©hris,

Good list. You might also want to check out this earlier thread which has a few choice gems on it (some will, of course, be a little dated, but most, I would think, would not.)

Here to help!!

As for the log book.....

I am working on making a logbook in MS Access. Using a 'switchboard' to make it sort of interactive.
I will post it up when I get it completed.

I'm not reallly sure of something 'free' that could help you. Sorry.

Cheers

Chris

Edit:
PS. Everything can be free if you know the right places to look!!! (Except Airline5, that you have to buy!)

I'll second phnuff's suggestion. Could this be made sticky? There are many tools here which could solve several problems people have had. Not to mention pointing people at perfectly good free software that could save them a bundle. Maybe it could be reorganised a little first though, as there are some duplicates in it (I am willing to help with this).

Thanks for putting that together ©hris!

Top list! Great work. Thanks Chris!

I third phnuff - this really deserves to be made sticky.

Just add a free OS, Wine and WineX and you have the world at your feet...

PS: You missed out MEPIS (and over 300 others) in your Linux distro list - I'll report on it in a week or so.

Two more free programs.

Winsock Fix: 'specially good for Win2K after an NIC change knackers your connectivity: WinsockFix Also works with Windows XP although it's not needed as often as with the other versions of Windows.

And a recent (for me) find that enables you to do a remote shutdown of Windows 2000 that goes all the way, not stopping at the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen:

Power Off

It really should be a sticky and up there with the travelling thread.

One I find very useful is the Knoppix Security Tools Distribution. Download and burn the .iso and you get a bootable CD full of useful tools for testing your network security. You may be surprised what services you are offering to the outside world.

...use it responsibly though folks

Microsoft Visual C++ Toolkit

http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/

FAQ:
What is the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003?
The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free edition of Microsoft’s professional Visual C++ optimizing compiler and standard libraries – the same optimizing compiler and standard libraries that ship in Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional!

Are there any restrictions on how I use the Visual C++ Toolkit?
In general, no. You may use the Toolkit to build C++ -based applications, and you may redistribute those applications. Please read the End User License Agreement (EULA), included with the Toolkit, for complete details.

Is there any technical support available for the Visual C++ Toolkit?
No. The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free download and is provided without formal technical support. Documentation for the Visual C++ compiler is available online, and it is recommended that further assistance be obtained by posing questions in online programming newsgroups and community forums.

What does the Visual C++ Toolkit install on my machine?
The Toolkit installs 1) the Visual C++ command-line compiler and linker, and their dependencies. 2) the Visual C++ C Runtime Library and static-link modules, and the Standard C++ Library, including STL 3) the Microsoft .NET Framework Runtime, including library files necessary for building C++ applications that run on the .NET Common Language Runtime, 4) four samples demonstrating key features of the Visual C++ compiler and libraries.

Just had to throw my two pennorth' in.

Been using Norton Internet Security / NAV for a year or two now and, to cut a long story short, needed to look for a replacement.

Installed Zone Alarm, used it many moons ago but it now seems a lot more seamless, you just dont notice its there.

On the virus scanner front, I've used AVG before, but was not totally convinced. Co-inciding with the start of this thread, I read a review of AntiVir . A respected PC journalist recommended it so I thought I would give it a try. Most impressed. Lightweight (very), it's updated very regularly and I've tested it on a number of recent viruses (deliberately downloading - am I mad?) and it caught them all instantly and without fuss. The only negative aspect in my opinion is that you have to remember to update it manually, and every update is a full replacement of the virus definition file, a shade short of 2mb, no probs with ADSL, but slightly irritating for dial up connections.

Would'nt dream of buying an AV product again whilst this is around.

I find Agnitum's Outpost personal firewall quite good. The free version can be found here.
