Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

Question Std?

With reference to examiner authorisation what is an STD? It is not mentioned in the glossary for the relevant standards document (21, v4) yet appears within.

Wink

"A STD may be used for certain aspects of training. In this context, STD means:

A. Subscriber Trunk Dialling.

B. Sexually Transmitted Disease.

C. Synthetic Training Device"

Guess which?

Hi DB6, it's probably a question of semantics but a simulator (ie a machine which simulates a dedicated type) is an example of an STD but it does not follow that all STD's are simulators!

Broadly:

A Flight Training device is anything that is used to replicate some aspect of an aircraft's operation. Some are more realistic or more specific WRT systems than others.

A simulator is a particularly accurate subset of Flight Training Devices ie it accurately replicates the flight dynamics & cockpit environment of some aircraft or other eg something that can be used for a type rating.
