SEP revalidation

Anyone know how long before an SEP rating runs out can it be renewed in order to add 2 years onto the end of the existing expiry date? Assuming you have fulfilled the requirement of 12 hours (including one with an instructor) in the second 12 months.

Some say 1 month, others 12 and I would go for 3 as per the MEP and IR.

Anyone know?
