This is the best 'text book' I have found for how airplanes work. The diagrams are not very big, but they are effective.

Power curves
The ability to hand draw the power curves and label all the relavent points is one of the key skills in teaching Pof F. Especially the power req curve with its key turning points.
Its well worth the effort to practice these and put them in your mental tool box so to speak.
However here is a good link with some good background to how the curves come about for both prop and turbine a/c

Helicopter Power Curves
Very interesting (and different) way of looking at power req'd in energy terms.
However, does anyone know a good site for helicopter power req'd/available graphs? Especially with information on how tranlational lift affects?
I checked out the contents from the link posted by slim_slag but couldn't find anything on helos.

Helo power curves
Sycamore, thanks for the url. Unfortunately when I tried to follow it I got a "HTTP 404 Not Found" error. Link I followed was www.rnk.co.uk/himan/ManViewer.htm. Is this the right url, or has the link died since you posted it? I am having some problems with my firewall and ISP so could be my system.
Cheers mate
