Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

EASA FI rating

Hey guys

I've been interested in instructing since i first started my PPL, and was reluctant to have to do a CPL, then go into instructing and watch some of my ratings expire. The ATPL's are something that i would like to do a few years down the line.
I understand that under EASA, PPL's are now allowed to obtain an FI rating.
I've done a bit of searching and cant find the requirements for this, can anyone share with me if you know how many hours are required before you can undertake the course under the new EASA regulations? plus any other requirements that may be relevant, e.g. is an IMC rating required?

Any help would be appreciated!

You still need CPL theory otherwise you are restricted to LAPL only.

You also need to meet the pre course skill requirements. I have personally never met a PPL that could go straight into a Flight Instructor course, every PPL I have flown with would need at least a skills refresher and in some cases significant extra training before they could fly to a high enough standard to begin flight instructor training.
