Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

My ballroom dancing teacher charges £45/hr a couple for her services.

It makes you think a bit about relative values though.

christian archer,

There is absolutely no substitute for experience, especially in aviation. You can not learn flying from books, I am sure you agree.

You will learn things by example from somebody whose been flying for years that you can not find in any book. That's the value of experience.

Personally, if you would be going for a new rating, lets say mountain or bush flying, given the same price, would you prefer somebody with 300 total hours just completed the same course to teach you what he just learned, or would you prefer somebody who's been flying in the mountains for years and years to teach you?

Foxmoth,

Completely agree with you but this is why I said that I am frequently told by students that OFTEN younger instructors are more enthusiastic and they prefer their younger approach. NOT ALWAYS!!! Also I competely agree that the older guys can have more experience..equally some have drifted through their 20,000+ hours without a single incident. I also agree that a lot of the younger guys are just hour building, I happen to love instructing. The main thesis of my argument was that there is no correlation between a lower accident rate from older instructors, as professed by the other guy. Perhaps I should have added that the opposite is true also! Is that better?
