Ex15 - Overbanking
For EX15 Advanced Turning, how do you approach and do the overbanking exercise? Further is it a teach for you, or simply a demo? Do you do a full spiral descent recovery (PRP), or just roll off the bank?

You should be teaching spiral descent recovery. Also I teach 45 degree aob turns and then teach then 60 degree aob turns. It shows them then that 45 degrees is not some mystical limit.
If they are overbanking - ie 55 in a 45 get them to roll off the bank and re-enter the turn.
You should also be demonstrating to them what happens if you do a 60 degree aob turn and don't increase the power ie stall warner goes off fairly quickly.

Imagine the student is going to photograph his mates house soon after gaining a PPL, what should he be shown at this stage to stop him killing himself at that stage. Answer that and you on the way to understanding what should be taught on this exercise

Student - practice 30 degree AoB turns.
Instructor - demo 45 deg AoB turns.
Student - practice 45 deg AoB turns.
Instructor - demo 60 deg AoB turns.
Student - practice 60 deg AoB turns.
Instructor - demo 60 deg AoB turn with insufficient power.
Instructor - demo steep descending turns 45 deg AoB from established glide.
Student - practice steep descending turns 45 deg AoB from establised glide.
Instructor - demo recovery from spiral descent.
Student - practice recovery from spiral descent.
Return home for tea and medals. Or beer and medals if its last detail of the day.

Important is trhe increase in stall speed (Sqr root of load factor, i.e. pulling 2G) Vs = 1.414 x 52 (normal stall) now =70+ kts at 60 deg AOB - it is the one that many persons even in twins have forgotten just before they spiral in from low level beating up their home in the country!

I think its important to stress this is primarily a visual exercise and the success at maintaining a level will be determined by reference to the visual horizon.
