Class 1 or class 2 medical?

Class 1 or class 2 medical?
Was wondering, can you become a F/I fixed wing, on a class 2 medical. I have heard of guys getting a restricted class 1, which enables them instruct?

not heard of a restricted class one medical apart from restricting the old duffer (post 60) captains to flying with a pre 60 year old first officer. nothing about limiting to instructing or aerial work. anyway, to answer your question. you can instruct on either class of medical, but can only get paid if you hold a class one (oh, and a cpl).

Guess it`s the old ring the Caa and wait a couple of hours to speak to someone(if even that`s possible now) or try and navigate the complex web pages and still be "none the wiser"?

It is possible to get a restricted class one medical (and therefore train for and get a CPL in order to be paid for flying). A class one restricted medical may have its validity restricted to UK registered aircraft in UK airspace, so not a problem for instructing.
An example of a case for a restricted class one would be if you met the class one renewal standards, but not the class one initial issue standards, and could demonstrate that you had safely flown many hundreds of hours without incident. As far as I can tell, each case is carefully assessed on its merits.
If you wish to go this route, then my advice would be to join AOPA who have all the advice on how to proceed.
