Multiflight 152 accident 15 May

Last monday a C152 from Multiflight (Leeds/Bradford) did not recover from a spin and crashed near Pately Bridge, Harrogate. Both were alive but very seriously injured and were transferred to hospital by a Navy helicopter. Daily Telegraph gave names as David Bower (instructor) and Bernard Merlino (BCPL student). Both I believe now stable in hospital.

I know someone that flew with this instructor quite alot up at multiflight and last time I talked to him he said that David (instructor) was in a stable condition but had suffered bad spinal injuries and would never walk again. I do not know anyone involved directly so it may not be spot on info, infact I hope that it is not. Thoughts are with both, and I wish them a good recovery.

Have tried to find out a couple of times how they are, especially as I have a personal interest. Multiflight did not return my calls. Obviously though I don't want to be intrusive during, what will undoubtedly be, some difficult months. A good friend of mine, a top pilot, was tragically injured 12 years ago and has been a tetraplegic ever since - so I know how difficult it is going to be if the injuries are that serious. I hope that they are not. If anyone does know how they are I would very much appreciate it if they could let me know. WWW has my E_Mail address, so you could pass the details through him if you do not want to put them in the forum. He is also able to (non publicly) explain my interest in this tragic accident, if you are concerned about that.

Dear All,
I have received an email from WWW concerning this accident.
I have given www all the information that I have to hand and unfortunately that does include the fact that Dave Bower is very very unlikely to be able to walk again. He has lost the use of his legs but still retains the use of his upper body.

Apologies for not returning calls, the incident also coincided with major office moves as well as yours truly moving to become a Yorkshireman, (only other Lancastrians will understand how painful that is ) Please try again and I'll ensure that I speak to you.

Only just logged on after a while away, sorry to hear about this. Would it be too soon to start posting some pointers as to how this could be avoided in the future.
Which aircraft was it? perhaps somebody could confirm the rumour that I heard that it was G-BFFC. Great little 152 that...

1. The aircraft involved was G-BPVJ. By a strange quirk of fate, it used to be owned by a pilot who is now the company's medical officer and who assisted in the operation to stabilise Dave's back injury.
2. Yes, spinning is a mandatory element of the BCPL syllabus. It is not a mandatory test item, it is simply at the examiner's discretion.
I have spoken to Dave today and told him of the concern amongst ppruners for his wellbeing and I am sure that he would love to hear from all of you.
as far as the cause of the accident is concerned, it would be wrong of me to discuss anything in this forum. It is however my own personal view that we will as an industry review some aspects of our training as a result of this accident. I know that we at Multiflight are currently in the process of instituting those changes as soon as possible.
Good luck and safe flying
