Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

Unhappy RAAF CFS qualification

Graduates of the RAAF CFS Instructor courses are granted an exemption by CASA from the theory and flying part of the GA instructor courses. The CFS course (which has greater content) qualifies service instructors to instruct on aerobatics, formation flying, and instrument flying for purposes of obtaining an RAAF instrument rating. RAAF pilots are all trained to carry out aerobatics and formation flying as part of the RAAF Pilot's Course.

In GA, approval to instruct in formation and aerobatics requires a log book certification. Because the content of the CFS course has been deemed by CASA to be acceptable for issue of a GA instructor rating, it should be logical to accept that an ex RAAF QFI can legally instruct in GA on aerobatics and formation flying, without a flight test and having a certification stamped in his log book? Does anyone know if CASA would go along with this theory?

What I am trying to avoid is the expense and trouble of obtaining these qualifications when I have already qualified in the RAAF. Appreciate comments.

CASA recognise the RAAF CFS training only IAW CAOs. You will still need to fly with a civil rated flying instructor to be written up legally to be able to fly AND instruct the such sequences.

RAAF QFIs who happen to be working under CASA rules currently have to be endorsed similarly!!! A pity CASA does not take a leaf out of the NZ and UK CAA books - they at least have recognised fully all military training and qualifications. The CASA priority however seems to be to cover its legal backside.

There are currently senior QFI's at CFS (ie the CFI and B FLTCDR etc) who can award you a civilan QFI rating. Why don't you speak to them to organise it while you're doing your upgrade or recat???
