Medical requirements for Instruction
I have a PPL(H) with FI(R) rating. (obtained in 1998)
I have always understood that in order to be paid for instruction I need a Class 1 medical.
However I've just been reading the latest LASORS on the subject:
Section H3 under the topic "Remuneration"
...Instructors who hold valid private pilot licences and valid JAR-FCL Class 2 medical Certificate are entitled to instruct but cannot receive payment for this service*.
* This does not apply to the holder of a UK PPL(H) who qualified prior to 1 January 2000 under national arrangements
So my question is: Can I instruct for money on a Class 2 medical?

Hiya,
Sorry im no expert but as far as I understand it to get paid for any job as a pilot you need a CPL and as such to hold a valid CPL you also need to have a current class 1 medical. Please correct me if im wrong as im just starting out planning my path to becoming an FI and am currently planning hour building in the US for the P1 hours required before starting a CPL then onto FI.

Also not an expert, but I suspect you're reading that regulation incorrectly.
The phrase in question is "This does not apply to the holder of a UK PPL(H) who qualified prior to 1 January 2000 under national arrangements". I suspect you're interpreting this exemption as applying to the phrase "cannot receive payment for this service" - i.e. if you received your PPL before that date, you are allowed to get paid for it.
I think the intention, though, was that the exemption applies not to the payment, but to the whole act of instructing? In other words, if you obtained your PPL before that date, you are not allowed to instruct at all? (Presumably you need a CPL to be able to instruct, whether for payment or not, if your PPL was issued before 1 Jan 2000?) That would be the way I'd read the bit you've quoted, anyway - but that doesn't mean I'm correct.

You definitely CAN be paid to instruct with a PPL/AFI/QFI rating. This was 'grandfathered' in when the regs were changed.
I relaise that if I were starting out now, I would need a CPL. That wasn't the case in 1998.
