FI job with no CPL?

Good day,
I read on this forum that someone is doing his FI before his CPL. I always thought that a CPL had to be held to instruct, or can you instuct but just not get paid for it? Is it possible to do a PPL, get an FI rating and then instruct before a PPL? What are the bare minimum requirments for becoming a flight instructor?
Thank you for your help!

Rich - you have to have the flight time (can't remember offhand - changed a lot since my days [yawn]) - have passed all written examinations at CPL (or ATPL) level and have done the FI course.

This would qualify you for an UNPAID flying instructor position.

To be paid for it (in JAA airspace) you would also need to hold the CPL (no need for an I/R though).

If teaching in USA (for example) then an FAA CPL would allow you to be paid for it - but more likely to be able to get a job if JAA rated instructor (as well as FAA instructor).

As a PPL licence holder, you can be paid for;

Flight instruction for the NPPL with microlight rating; and

Ground Instruction for any licence or rating that you hold.
