I posted this on Tech Log but wondered if anyone here could answer this question:

When I first saw this on a Qantas A380 I assumed that it was active load alleviation to reduce fatigue consumption, and much of the material in Tech Log confirms and expands on this. The video there is particularly interesting to watch.

The chap next to me had a much more pithy explanation. He described it as "the flight control computers fighting each other to the Death".

Whatever, it is highly entertaining to watch. It kept me fascinated as far as Kiev before I even switched on the I.F.E!

Their purpose is to reduce tip vortex drag. They save considerable weight compared to a wing fitted with winglets.

A very long time ago I worked on a much more primitive system for gliders.
