Tight turning Tornado
On the Tuesday the 23rd Dec I was awakend from my office routine by the piercing howl of a jet, I dropped what I was doing to rush outside just in time to see a Grey Tornado at about 800ft with wings back going into a very tight turn, just at this point the noise increased and I saw that the afterburners were lit, but the speed didnt increase , or it seemed so to my eye, then after about 6 seconds the A/Bs were turned off, the A/c rocketed away to do a circuit round Samlesbury, then lucky me he returned to do exactly the same turn around the fields just NE of where I live, this time with wings out yet again he lit up the rear end for about 5 or 6 seconds, quiet spectacular and I would like to see that at least once a week, however could some one in the know answer the simple question ,
Would he lite up the A/Bs to keep his momentum up in a tight turn and therby prevent sinkage, or is there some other reason?

The greater the sweep angle the greater the induced drag when pulling g. So burners are needed to keep up the speed. Not exactly to control 'sinkage' - that depends more on a tad of back stick.
