Question on Flight Route - MAN-PHL-MCO Example

I have been wandering this for a few years now...As Former USairways flight 197 from Manchester to Philadelphia kept changing it's destination after the Philadelphia landing...
Example: MAN-PHL-SFO + MAN-PHL-LAS + MAN-PHL-MCO

What would be the benefits of keeping the same flight number even though it's a completely different aircraft type...and lots of flights from PHL to other US airports anyway?

Thanks
