Unhappy BAE sheds 1005 UK jobs

More bad news for the industry...

BAE Systems is to cut 1,005 aircraft-related jobs at four UK sites.

The job losses are a result of restructuring in the Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft programme, BAE said in a statement.

They are also a consequence of a reduction in workload in its regional aircraft unit and a reduced level of work in its aerostructures unit.

The announcement of the job cuts by the defence and aerospace manufacturer comes as British forces gear up to go to war against Iraq.

Nearly 200 jobs will go at BAE's site at Prestwick as a result of the announcement.

Workers at two business units, specialising in aircraft systems and structures, will be affected.

The move will reduce the workforce at the two units by about a quarter.

The job losses were also a result of a downturn in the global civil aircraft market, a BAE spokeswoman said.

Not enough - should be at least 1006 to include the Chairman.

Is that the same chairman who acted surprised when told Nimrod was overrunning 5 years after the rest of the industry knew, and publically proclaimed that there was no future in developing and building whole new aircraft?
