Currency on Type

Can any one advise? Nowadays most companies/agencies require Engineers to have 6 months in the previous 2 years currency on Type for Certification privileges. I believe this has come about over recent years from Insurance Company requirements? Does a refresher course (eg one or two week) suffice as instant up to date currency? Obviously this would be a cost. Would appreciate any comments and info.

I think if you call the CAA they may give you some leeway due to covid restrictions. Worth a phone call anyway.

HI Turin - Companies require a letter from a Quality Dept, or signed Log Book of actual time on Type -doubt if they'd accept any certification from the CAA.

The 6 months in previous 24 is nothing new, been around since I got my first BCAR LWTR 😯 as long as you've been using your licence, albeit not on type is ok in that respect, as for recency on a specific type I would suggest that is down to the individual airline/QA department to determine.

Yes I understand the 6mths/2 yrs as far as pure or general experience goes - that's always been there; my query is the 6mths/yrs on a SPECIFIC AIRCRAFT/ROTORCRAFT TYPE. This has only came about in the last decade or two. I believe if a Type Course has been completed for the grant of an initial rating, then that is suffice to fulfil the experience requirement. My query was, would a short refresher course, as some Engineers do as part of their on-going training an/or company requirements, be suffice to count as 6mths/2yrs experience on TYPE?

This has caused a few issues in Australia with the 6 in 24 requirements for types in the Part 145 MOS.

Unfortunately - the answer to your question will lie in the respective Maintenance organization's QA manual - as to what they accept. And what procedure they have in place to regain that currency.

Thanks - I thought as much - depends on each company. This 6/24 month "thing" has caused a lot of problems post Covid I believe. I understand it has arisen, from a few years ago now, as a result of Insurance requirements. First it was the Accountants trying to tell Engineering Managers how and when to do maintenance, then the Insurance Companies got in on the act re safety/accountability etc. Regards

As has been said, it will be upto respective quality departments to determine "similar types"

Depends on the company as previously mentioned, mine used 3.4 (b) from the above link as a way around it by adding Neo to my licence.
