Getting a Part 66 Licence

Hi all,

I'm looking at becoming a LAME, airframe to start with. I've been told to get an SOE and look at doing the exams. Looking at the CASA website it says that the CASA Basics exams and the SOE are only useful until the 3rd of June 2020, which is obviously before my four years of experience would be up.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem too clear as to what I'll have to do. What sort of process do I need to follow in order to get the licence?

Cheers

Your best bet is to get an apprenticeship. Go round and speak to every shop in your local area and try to get a job with the aim of securing an apprenticeship.

I specialise in helicopter maintenance so my comments may not be applicable. Apprenticeships in any country seem to be as rare as chickens teeth. Looking at the adverts for jobs, the EASA licence is king. Regions such as Africa and the Middle East that readily took CASA licenses now advertise for EASA. If you are able to pay the course costs and the time to do full time study I say EASA is the way to go and it converts to a CASA licence as well.

Please be aware that you MUST gain practical experience to become a LAME. Just passing the exams will only empty your wallet. An apprenticeship is the ideal method but there are other ways if you are prepared to work for very little money.
