Small AC maintenance schedule/general maintenance related questions

Hi!
First post, hope this lands in correct subforum.

I'm writing a paper for school about small aircraft (probably will stay with fixed wings only) owner maintenance. I've briefly read Part M (especially subpart C) and Part 145, but can't find unambiguous, easy-to-follow info.
I'm generally interested about:

1. types of maintenance tasks owners of the aircraft are allowed to do themselves
2. maintenance schedules (i.e. 50 hr, 100 hr checks etc)

Info on both US and Europe is welcomed, but European legislation is of higer priority.
Thanks!
