Question ETOPS Regulation?

Apologies of this is the wrong area to post in.

A few days ago I was having a discussion with a co-worker about ETOPS.
It came after one of our aircraft had 'ETOPS 180' painted to the NLG Door. And another aircraft of the same type, not having this, but also being ETOPS rated.

While in my college days, I was told that it is mandatory for all ETOPS rated aircraft, to have ETOPS painted, along with its rating, externally on the aircraft.
However, my co-worker thinks otherwise, that it is not mandatory.

Neither of us can find any documentation, or clarification on the matter.

Can anyone shed some light on this, its bugging me, as I said, I've always thought it was mandatory...
