Wanting to get my foot in the door!

Hey guys.

Just joined the forum as i have many burning questions that need to be answered, also i do apologise if this post is in the incorrect section of this forum!

Im currently a engineer on Harriers, however with them coming out of service, im having to look else where.

Only being a lvl 2 NVQ equivalant as someone on the street, im considering apprenticeships with Airline companies as this would be the sensible option.

Im hoping this is a wise decision, as the two years experience will hopefully stand me in good steed with interviews for a basic apprenticeship. As my title suggests im simply trying to get my foot in the door and get on that ladder so i can have a good career in which i enjoy doing.

Ive searched airline companies and rang them several times but have no luck. Ive also searched this forum but the threads seem to all be within a date of 2007~2008.

Im currently looking at Monarch as they hold apprenticeship courses at Manchester, which would be truely beneficial, but they are not currently taking anyone on.

Anyways my question is, does anyone have an up-to-date gist of the current vacancies for apprenticeships to this date?

Any advice or tips would be hugely appreciated.

Kyle.

That should be your bible for looking jobs up.
If you are willing to relocate I can try and give you other options.

What has been your service training, and HOW LONG have you served? Have you only been a liney or have you done hangar time?

Get onto Rotaries if you can stay in.. Best advice at the mo..

Thanks for the replies

I'll have a look at that link thank you, looks like I may have to spread my roots if I wish to just work at Manchester airport

Been in for two years still in now , they Are trying to retrain us on rotary lynx / merlin but I prefer fixed wing, which is useless now.

I would say I've done both were linies first then tradesman second , we have a plane captain system so if it's in the hangar I have to help the supervisors on trade , and if ita flying ita my job to Marshall it out and in with all the service and fuel and water .

You seem to be in the know with the military , you ex mil ? And you think I have a chance to start somewhere ?

Once again thank you for your replies.

You has mostly been a liney on NSW then. AF/BF, TRs and doing line rectification jobs. You may be able to get in somewhere as a connie, but I doubt it will be easy. Your training and experience is nowhere near as extensive as a time served Apprentice or a time served RAF/ RN trades man further up the chain. If you are mechanical, you will have very limited sheetie time as well (if any). I do know because I used to work at Cottesmore until 7 years ago. If you had the modules, the CAA would still be looking at you doing 3 to 4 years minimum before a B licence would be allowed to be issued.. You have that little experience.

You could do the rest of your time on rotaries and do all the B modules for your path (AV or Mechanical). Record all the work you do and you could be laughing when you finally leave.. The industry will possibly pick up then.

This video may help you decide.

Rotary vs Jets..

Your best bet is to look around and make some calls, try

Virgin atlantic
BA
flybe
and as you say monarch,
(you could consider taking a couple of Part 66 modules to show employers you are keen and willing)

Things are a bit tough at the moment to find work, but good luck
