Hi, just wondering what the different names of an engine tell us...
As an example TIO-540-J2BD, IO-360-L2A or PT6A-135A
I believe there is a letter code designated for injected engines or how they are mounted etc?
Thanks.

Not sure about TPs/Turbofans but piston engines have designator codes. Here's a brief summary:
O - Horizontally opposed
I- Fuel Injection
T - Turbocharged
G - Geared
S - Supercharged
Can't think of any others... anyone care to add?
The number after the letters is the engine's displacement in Cubic Inches (to convert to Cubic Centimeters multiply by 16.4). The number/letter after that specifies what magnetos are used, I think.
So, for example, an IO-360-L2A engine is a horizontally-opposed, fuel-injected engine with a displacement of 360ci (about 5900cc) equipped with L2A magnetos.
Anyone care to explain the coding system used for turbines?

Few examples,
RB211-TRENT892
Rolls-Barnoldswick (design house) 211 (project number for 3 shaft)
Trent (brand name) 8 (800 series) 92 (thrust rating in pounds)
V2500-A5
V (V roman numeral for number of original consortium members) 25 (25lb thrust) - A (Airbus) 5 (no idea!).

The L2a is the variant of the piston engine, not the mags fitted,
As for adding other versions to the list
you have missed
L for left hand rotation as in fitted to a twin.
V for Vertical installation as in Helicopters.
A for Aerobatic use.
Rolls Royce used to name their Gas turbines after Rivers
Welland
Trent
Derwent
Spey
Tyne etc
Original Bristol Engines were named After mythology
Gnome
Goblin
Orpheous
Pegasus
The french used Mountains? therefore and I am not 99% on this the Adour was as a combined engine named after the Adour which is a mountain river to show both countries collaborations

Where does Turbomeca get the names for its products?
Most Turbomeca engines bear names taken from the Pyrenees mountain range that forms the backdrop to the company's headquarters. Names of lakes are used for turbo-shaft engines, mountain peaks for the single-spool turbo-jet engines, mountain passes for twin-spool turbo-jet engines, winds for turbo-generators and valleys for turbo-propeller engines. Such is the inspirational power of nature!

Lycoming also has an H designator for Helicopter engines that are not mounted vertically.
And setting the way back clock, Pratt and Whitney named most of their radial engines after the Wasp family of insects:
Pratt & Whitney Wasp series
R-1340 Wasp
R-985 Wasp Junior
R-1830 Twin Wasp
R-1535 Twin Wasp Junior
R-2800 Double Wasp
and Wright went for meteorological with their round motors
R-1300 Cyclone 7
R-1820 Cyclone 9
R-2600 Cyclone 14 (Twin Cyclone)
R-3350 Cyclone 18 (Duplex Cyclone)

We who worked for the old British European Airways once suggested to Rolls Royce that the early version of the Tyne had been missnamed, it should have been the Ouse because or the amount of oil it lost through oil seal problems .
It was not received with much warmth

Come on you guys, nobody even told this chap that the TIO-540-J2BD, is the left hand engine in a PA31-350 Navajo Chieftain, call yourself engineers.
Have one in the shop should any-one want one.
