Antonov AN-2 - Operating Costs

Would anyone have an idea of the operating costs of an AN-2?

Cheers

I would Google AN2 for private oweners and be cheeky and E-mail them as i have just done a few searches for AN2 costs and i couldnt see a thing, unless you count

"the costs have risen over the years"

as a cost...

Op COsts AN-2

Try: http://an2flyers.com/ there is a great engine startup soundtrack there.
What a superb machine! Used a lot in the DRC.

The joke is that "they are very well designed, you know? They run out of fuel just before they run out of engine oil ......."

One tricky aspect about them I am told is that they have a problem with oil running past the rings on the lowest barrel. This measn that if you leave the machine parked for greater than 45 mins you have to pull a plug from the bottom cyclinder to drain out the oil otherwise you get a hydraulic lock.

I met someone in Khartoum who was talking about overhauling a bunch of AN-2s and selling them once done at $35,000US. Very tempting.

Let me know what you find out by the way - I'd be interested to know how much they cost to operate.

From the AN-2 Flyers website (FAQ's)

How much does it cost to operate an An-2?

The An-2 typically burns 2-5 quarts of oil per hour ($5 to $10) and 45-55 gph of fuel ($90 to $125 depending on where you buy). Maintenance costs should be based on a 100 hour inspection cycle ($2,000+ per insp. or $20+ per flight hour). Typical annual replacement items with steady monthly use (600 hours annually) are both main tires, one engine accessory (pump, compressor, magneto?), and two complete sets of 18 spark plugs (about $2,400 of parts annually, or $4 per flight hour). All told you will spend about $160-$200 per flight hour to fly this great aircraft, not counting your annual insurance payments and tie-down fees.
