Help! Starting from scratch......

Hi,
I've seen a few similar posts in the past but i'm still not clued up....

I've been working for a military aerospace design and manufacture company for 3 years but after spending the majority behind a desk think this is not for me!

for a few months i've been really interested in the easa pt66 licensed aircraft engineer route but i'm not sure on the best way into the job and i'm after any info u can provide!

i've seen the 'fast-track' courses that kingston and newcastle run towards the B licence, but it doesn't seem that these courses are appreciated in the industry as on completing the course after 2 years the students have limited experience. another question is how many employers take on these students? there seem to be lots of rumours that quite a few can't find work.

are apprenticeships the best (altho maybe slightly longer) way to become a licenced aircraft eng? are there any decent ones around? it'd mean a paycut but i'd be prepared to do it if its the best way in. however at 24, am i too old to start?

i was really interested in doing it and written reports i'd read claimed there were lots of job opportunities and a high demand, but having read quite a few posts both here and on airmech it sounds like this may not be the case? What is the state of the maintenance industry, is it v.hard to get the experience but once you have you're in great demand?

any help/advice would be great!

end of essay......
