Hoppy, I thought that the 02 was for the installation (as in 01 = VC10, 02 + TriStar & 03 = 747), could be wrong though!!!

The 'B' series was developed for the Tristar -500 and each step along the evolution bought an improvement in the SFC.
The -524b-02 was the first engine for the -500 with 50000lbs of thrust.
The -524b3-02 same thrust of 50000lbs with an improvement of -2.8% in the SFC. This engine had changes to the fan and improved gasflow.
The -524b4-02 same again but another improvement in the SFC (-4.8%). This engine had a new fan, new 05 module (I.P./L.P.turbines) and the cooling air offtakes were revised.
The other growth path was for the B747 with improvements in thrust and SFC.
They started life as the -524B2-19 (-19=B747)

Thanks chaps.
When -500s are listed some have B4 engines and others have B4-02 so are these the same?

HHMMmmmm!...... Not sure to be honest, but I think the 'b' was the first in the family and would have had some components and layout from the earlier -22b. There were a lot of mods done to the engine fuel system, gear box and oil system!
FYI the b3-02 was an interim development and ordered by PAN-AM.
It may be a historical thing and I would think that by now they would all be to the same mod standard.....but I may be wrong!

Pratt and witney did much the same with the JT9D It started life as a -3a then -7 -7cn (converted -3a) -7a and the list went on!!
