Question NWA (US) Mechanics-the latest?

A buddy works there and is trying to find out what the latest is beween his company and AMFA, which represents their mechanics/engineers. The pilot is coming back from leave.

Does anyone know first hand if there is a major "problem", tenetatively scheduled to take place there in the next week or so?

Northwest Airlines Corp (NWAC) (6.38 +0.47)
NORTHWEST AIRLINES CORP. has hired about 400 mechanics to replace those who may walk off the job if negotiations on a labor deal break down, the mechanics union said. The president of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, Ted Ludwig, said the names of the new workers appeared in the airline's computer system, which showed they had been issued employee numbers and start dates. AMFA has said the airline, which is seeking $1.1 billion in annual labor savings, is bracing for a possible mechanics strike even though the union has not formally threatened one. Northwest denied that it has hired replacement workers. The carrier has said that while it prefers to settle any contract disputes through negotiations, it has "developed contingency plans to be prepared for any eventuality." "We are going to file a grievance on this," he said. "We want this resolved. We want these people to pay union dues." AMFA and Northwest have been negotiating a labor deal that would save the airline $176 million annually. The AMFA contract became amendable on May 11, but talks began last year. AMFA has until June 8 to respond to the request. (Reuters 01:22 PM ET 06/02/2005 More...) Could get very ugly....

There is still a 30 day manditory cooling of period required before a strike. So, even if an impasse is declared by AMFA, this law must be applied.

Of course, the union wants the dues.
Standard union jargon for...extract the most, deliver the least.

Having said this, labor relations at NW have been/are nearly as poor as they were at the old National Airlines in MIA years ago, when 'ole Bud Maytag played the IAM/ALPA like a violin.

A generally hard core group of union militants against hard-nosed management.
Standare procedure at NW....and likey always will be.
