Personally I prefer a brown dustcoat with a flat cap and a brown roll-yer-own hanging out of one corner of my mouth.

You can refine the effect and show what kind of engineer you are by what you have sticking out of the top pocket - slide rule, magnifying glass, mini-mag light etc.
