MTBF

Mean time before failure. When an aircraft manufacturer issues a specification to a vendor for a part for their aircraft, they will normally specify that it must have a MTBF of xxx say 10,000 hours.

Its just a way a defining reliability

I'm comparing between different engine types in order to assess reliability.

For instance, MTBF for the PT6 is 346,000 Hours. Not bad! Think the Lycoming's going to be in the 10,000 bracket for sure - but then it is a piston.

Even at 2000hs they are not really worn.

The L-540 is one of the best, if it's not blown.

Lycoming may have some claim to fame!.

By camparison some big turbines are now up around the 30K mark.

Piston engines are hard timed still.

BN on the isle may be a good source of facts and information.

Might be PBN now.
