Anyone guess what these guys would be doing to the engine ?

I would guess they are balancing the props. Appears to be some leads going into the emergency exit from the engine. The object on the top cowl is probably a photocell which detects blade position and RPM.
You cant drive metros with the main door opened.

(Looks a bit like Jandacot)

Could it be trimming the FCU?

Seen it done before on 737's with wires out of the emergency exit onto the engine.

Just a guess.
