Last I saw KEN was about 1987ish...in pieces still/ or again next to the New Tribes Mission hanger at Goroka. Richard and his brother were going to restore it 'long term'. Richard was killed in P2-ROW (ex P2-BAF) C-185 in about 1992 or 3 between Omkalai and Karamui. His brother, whose name escapes me, was flying for NTM in the those days.

I never saw KEN again and have no dea what transpired although I have a vague recollection that she may have been shipped to OZ and stored there by the Rowes.

The last time I had to get a pilot out of his seat after a 'death defying manoeuvre' the only way we could move him was to get a set of tyre levers underneath him to break the seal.:D

Two nice, new replacement tyres now fitted in accordance with the CMM and all paperwork duly signed off. I'll have another go next week! :D

Yeah OK; what has happened to 14R? Last time I saw it, well just iover ten years ago it was long enough to hold a BN2 down until the ASI reached 100kts then rotate and be well over 1000' by the far end..................... or so I was told by a couple of DZ pilots I won't name.

Geez Pinky, its unlikely that anyone will ever be able to do THAT again. The pavement was found to be substantially weakened and, for a time, the whole of 14R was closed. It was subsequently decided that a small section near the middle, of something like 500 metres - maybe more, but I haven't kept up on that - was reopened for Twotters, Islanders and the like.

It was apparently decided that the cost involved in restoring the whole length wasn't justified by traffic needs. Thus, so far as I'm aware, there are no plans to bring the full length back into use.

So, effectively, Moresby now has only one runway, being 14L/32R.

Anyway, to give the real answer to the original question, yes, I made a cock-up. It's normally not a problem to vacate 14L at the first taxyway, in the B200, without overstressing anything. All that is necessary is to have all the numbers right on short final.

I didn't have the numbers right and ended up landing a bit longer than I'm accustomed to. I still felt that I could easily vacate by that first taxyway and wasn't aware that I was using excessive braking. In fact, if anything, I'd have reckoned that I was using more reverse thrust than usual. One lives and learns, but them tyres can't even be boiled down to make decent condoms! :eek:

Well I suppose if they fixed it, the runway, it would go against the trend that has been evident since 'independence' but really obvious since about 1988...i.e. If it breaks it stays broke! Unless of course the Japs can be coonvinced to build a new one a la the Tower at Tokua...which cracked at the first guria and when sooty went to the generator room the first time (probably to sleep) found all the instructions in Japanese!

Why is it everywhere I go in Indonesia, East Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, Burma, Nepal, India etc etc everything works and even at 'little' places like Solo, Yogyakarta, Bintulu there is a tower and usually an ILS. Banjarmasin is the Indonesian equivelent of Vanimo and it has ATC facilities the equal of POM...at Rp5000/USD it just never ceases to impress me!

Man you should see the aviation action in Indonesia these days. New airlines starting up left and right...mostly using old fully depreciated 737s, 727s, F28s etc but all painted beautifully and always plenty of punters in the terminals at Surabaya, Balikpapan etc etc.

The answer is more than the 300 million population!
