Whats the story with the grounding of all Brasillia's, is this Aus wide or limited to one operator??

Dog One 18th May 2002 07:26

Do tell all Balinda - heard plenty of northen bras's flying yesterday and today. What spicy anti Airnorth rumour have we today?

Balinda 18th May 2002 09:55

Don't know that is why I was asking the Q.

I was talking to a friend this morning and he said some engineers told him that all Brass were grounded???

I also saw them flying today so I guess it was incorrect

Dan Kelly 19th May 2002 23:53

In Flight Shutdowns

I heard a story last week about a Bras which suffered 4 inflight shutdowns in 4 sectors.

Supposedly, one pilot sacked for refusing to fly it.

Supposedly, a regional CASA office talking the HQ boys out of suspending the AOC.

If any of this is true, one can only wonder!

edit for typo

Balinda 20th May 2002 06:00

Heard a very simialr story.
I was wondering whether the Timor Indepedence day may have been a factor. It would not look good if a few of the arranged flights from darwin to Dili could not take place at such an important time.
If this is the case we may well see some action tomorrow.

bigenchilada 23rd May 2002 23:18

Balinda,

It would appear that you heard correctly. Don't know whether it had anything to do with the ET Independence celebrations. However have heard on good authority that said operator was on the receiving end of the regulators biggest stick earlier in the week. Word from inside the camp is that this must be contained at all cost, which will no doubt be hard when it appears on the authroity's website under "regulatory action"!

Balinda 24th May 2002 00:38

Thanks Bigenchilada,

I will have to keep my eyes open for that one.

Certainly about time.

Dan Kelly 24th May 2002 02:07

Further scuttlebut has it that the PIC during the first shutdown was instructed by the Ops Mgr NOT to submit any paperwork to the ATSB and threatened with termination if he didn't fly the aircraft back to home base. Surely, if true, this is in contravention of the requirement to submit an ASIR after an inflight shutdown.

I can't atest to the accuracy of any of this as all the info I'm hearing is third hand.

bigenchilada 24th May 2002 06:29

Dan K,

The beating drums I heard advised that aforementioned pilot found himself in a similar position towards the end of last year and is still having problems sitting comfortably. Hardly surprising he dug his heels in. Can only hope that he is not made the scape goat for other dodgey decisions.

Will be interested to see how this pans out. Feel sorry for all the great people that work there who have become unwitting victims.

Dog One 24th May 2002 11:09

Could some one explain why a Captain would fly 4 sectors shutting down an engine on each sector. Sounds a little far fetched to me.

Sounds like the story has been embelished a little bit. Perhaps the story teller works for the NT News!

Dan, can you tell us how recent the 4 sector/4 inflight shut downs was. I would imagine that CASA would also be taking their big stick to the Captain for such a performance.

Dan Kelly 24th May 2002 13:38

Dog

The shutdowns were about 1.5 months ago, or so I hear.

I hear that the Captain on the first two occasions had been ordered to work on a day off, with his wife about to deliver number one child.

The last two shutdowns I hear, happened the next day with a different skipper.

bigenchilada 25th May 2002 01:41

Dog & Dan

All seperate incidents with one poor unfortunate being on the receiving end of 2. However after the repercussions of the first one it wa unlikely that he would even contemplate flying the aircraft without engineering input, no matter what the Ops Mgr thought.

The whole sordid saga has not gone unnoticed by regulator who has taken action despite this being kept under warps by said operator. I believe they have been asked to give 10 good reasons....

Blue Sky Baron 25th May 2002 02:44

Balinda,
To answer your original question as to the groundings, I believe it was all Brasilia's and was due to a breakdown in communications between the manufacturer, CASA and the operators where some operational documents were not sent/received in a timely manner by all parties. This was cleared up and they were all back in the air within 24 hours.

The some of the other problems mentioned here are all still to be sorted out and fur may still yet fly!!

Balinda 25th May 2002 23:19

I would like to keep this near the top, some companies blunder through there existance without much publicity payed to there indescretions, some get front page headlines.

About time the NT news got hold of this and investigated.
If there is any truth and made the public should be made aware.

strewth 26th May 2002 01:24

BALINDA, the NT News to investigate an aircraft incident? And include the unbiased, unadulterated, unsensationalised truth?

I suppose........ It COULD happen..................

Nah :D :D :D

Balinda 26th May 2002 01:45

No you are right the NT news couldn't report accurately on a crocodile lose in Mitchel street, but possibly they could chase it through CASA and get a reasonbale quote.
Suggest wicking should be the reporter, maybe not accurate but definitely funny.
In any case bring it to the publics attention that all is not rosy.

Envirascape,
should that read report to ops manager

#1AHRS 26th May 2002 02:27

Oh no Ballinda the NT News must surely by now have had enough practise at making a good croc story but a story about..um..err... something else relevant to the NT might be a little difficult.

Balinda 26th May 2002 22:31

so any more news yet???

bigenchilada 27th May 2002 00:22

Balinda,

Suspiciously quiet on the norther front. However I did hear that said operator was attempting to distract attention away from itself by using that pillar of noteworthy reporting to persue other operators for alleged malpractice. Definately a case of the pot calling the kettle black here!

Also heard that the senior flight ops management of this erstwhile organisation are still in denial mode (well at least to the employees). When confronted by an employee questioning short term (28 day) job stability. The repsonse was abject horror that loyal employee should even be aware of pending action. When questioned as to where they heard about "it:, the response was "everyone on the airfield is talking about it and not only that its on the internet, duh!!!"

Probably the most astounding thing is that none of the reputable media (not the NT News) have grabbed the story, if for no other reason than a good old CASA bashing story. Must be running a serious supression campaign?

However, sad as it may be at the end of the day they will no doubt respond by appearing to relieve alleged recalcitrant owners, and replace them with loyal puppets who will no doubt continue the legacy of exemplary management practice. a notable trait of that organisation for so long!!!

Balinda 27th May 2002 01:40

Yes,
However the facts will come out and it will become public if it is interesting enough.

They can't buy that many lunches, dinners and free tickets
