Other Jobs whilst not flying
I find myself in a rather sh!#ty situation of not flying at the moment. I have almost 3 years full time flying experience, yet have been unable to secure the next job. This is not a vain plea for someone to employ me as that would be a waste of bandwidth, however this is intended to start some sort of discussion or tips from those of you who have been in a similar situation, or even ideas on what jobs I can do meantime with the aviation skills I have to further equip myself in case this happens again. Thoughts???....
Yes I am/have been in a similar situation.
I have been a cleaner, a deli assistant, night shift worker, and labor hire lacky. The latest solution is by far the best, try to find an aviation employer who will hire you on a casual basis. This keeps your experience and currency on the level, ready for the next full time slot.
Good luck mate.

Go shoot kangaroos for the local indigineous population. My base manager reckons it's a pi$$er! (only when it is too late to fly another scenic, that is). Don't ask less than $50 each.
You must of course have the flexibility of a part time position, though.

I heard a comment recently that unemployed pilots seem to work in other jobs starting with "P" i.e. packer, porter, pizza delivery etc. Fortunately the oldest profession "p" word was not included, but when I think how many hours on the ground I have to work to pay for one hour up there, I might have to reconsider that other "p" job!

Some flying schools are often looking for casual theory instructors. I know its not air time but its good Av Brain time.
I'm in the same situation and decided to go back to full time work and cost share on weekends. I managed 50 hours this year flying friends around to various major events. Its not a lot of time but enough to keep the log book ticking over until I can land a job.
Cheers,
PA

I like the sound of roo hunting! Can anyone tell me what the gun laws are like in Oz? Is it easy to buy a gun, if you have a legitimate use for it?
