Affirmative action

I read recently that an internal report presented to the Labor party by Hawke recommended that the ALP should boost female representation to 35%.

My question, do you believe in Affirmative action and is there examples in your part of the industry?

For example do you believe 35% of Flight Attendants should be male? Or that 20% of Pilots must be female.

Is affirmative action alive in Aviation? What about other occupations?

Apparently in the FBI in the good old US of A a specified number of successful candidates must be be of a particular gender or racial backround.

From what I have heard from friends/relatives in the USA affirmative action was a resounding failure.

The reason?
The wrong people being given jobs of great importance and responsibility, lawsuits flying left, right and centre by the appropriate parties after having being rejected, millions wasted covering the affirmative members stuff-ups and so on.

In my book a job shouldn't be allocated as supposedly having x% men/women or whatever.
The most suitable candidate (regardless of race/creed/colour/religion/sex should always get the job - nothing more and nothing less.

The Labour parties crap statement of having 40% female candidates is just bogus.
Give it to whoever wants it and is the most suitable.

Affirmative action I dont think exists as it did in the USA but I do know nepotism is alive and well and thriving in QF/DJ and the old Ansett.

Affirmative action. What a JOKE! I feel sorry for anyone who got a job on her own merits and then gets labelled as using her gender and affirmative action to get it.

... it would be nice if the real world were a level playing field with common goalposts and the girls didn't have to be twice as good to be considered half as good ..... not to mention being paid the same money for the same work ... and the same thoughts apply in any area of discrimination ... whether gender based .. ethnicity .. religious ... whatever ...

Then affirmative action programs would be irrelevant and unnecessary ..

Stay away from it mate.
Next they will want the vote, want you to sleep on the wet bit, and you will end up with the politically correct, pussy-whipped, whale hugging shambles we have here in the shakey isles.

I would rather know that i got the job because of my qualifications rather than due to someones misguided policy. In my opinion, its discrimination to employ someone just because they are female, just the same as its discrimination to pay them less because they are female...

Well, as it is a given that among the basic requirements to be a polly are:

A born liar.

Thick skinned.

No memory whatsoever - when expedient

No morals whatsoever - anytime

etc. etc. etc. (please add as you feel appropriate).

Could it be that a majority of women simply don't qualify!?

The best person for the job and all that seems kinda obvious

its just some recruiters will be biased for a long time to come. Selecting staff often boils down to how comfortable an interveiwer is with an applicant as that will affect (subconciously) their opinion.

the balance will adress itself soon enough. Look at your average uni (in non-aviation courses) and the stenet mix is dominated by women, selective entry is doing that. IE having the most qualified people

The South African cricket board recently scrapped their quota system and will now be selecting 'the best available side'.

Makes sense to me.
