Thumbs up NZ Instructor / Commercial Job

Was talking to the chief of Scott Air today and he said he wanted......

An Instructor (preferably B-cat but C-Cat acceptable including those who wish to obtain a C-Cat) with MEIR (including those wishing to obtain a MEIR) to work for next to nothing in a small eastern Bay of Plenty company. Possibly two (2) positions available in preparation for the summer season.

Nature of business is Charters, S/E Scenics, flight training & scheduled IFR freight run.

Boss man looking for "the right person" so even if you fall short of the quals above give it a go. Cheap IFR training available on dead leg of freight run, so those who want a MEIR, good operational exposure.

Contact or visit Chris Scott at

Can't be many guys or gals looking for a crack at an operational job.

I was under the impression that there were quite a few kiwi wannabes looking for a break

Good luck anyway

Exclamation Be VERY CAREFUL!!

BE VERY CAREFUL!!

What Mr Scott says and what he MAY do are two completely different things...

I don't mean to discourage people, as it is a good company from a public perspective, and it has a very good image. They have worked hard to get the company to the level it is now.. I'm just saying be wary of people that will sell you the world and give you crap all in return..

Expect to do a lot of early morning shifts driving vehicles between the base in Whakatane and to the aircraft based in Rotorua,
Cleaning aircraft - i.e 3-4 of em - every day
and general office work, making coffee, tea, taking bookings..

Just like any entry level G.A position..

And as Sqwark said "Next to nothing"..

Just like any entry level G.A position..

fly real fast

The other guys currently there are happy there, they're flying.. Both of the pilots there and Mr Scott are twin rated, IFR rated and fly the morning IFR run Rotorua to Gisborne...However as Mr Scott has said, the purpose of obtaining the run was for him to build up his twin IFR hours... so he has pulled guys off the run before for a short period when he wishes to go flying.. fair enough, boss of your own company..

One guy did his instructor's rating there, and was told that there may have been work for him afterwards flying scenics and instructing, all part time. He was about to get online with them, did a couple of backseat rides, helped out in the office, washed a few planes and helicopters, however Mr Scott pulled him off last minute and told him that there was no longer a place for him at Scott Air. This after he gave much consideration of where to do his instructors rating, because the chance of work afterwards.. and the built up rapore..

The reason? well Mr Scott thought that the guy didn't have the "right stuff" according to him. This guy had also just landed himself a PART TIME C206 job, down the coast... and was intending to work both places on a part time basis. Mr Scott didn't like this, as he wanted someone available full time for possible part time work, so made up this guy's mind for him and ditched him..

That guy has since moved onto greener pastures..

Wheetbixkid - it's the same anywhere with any entry level G.A job.. your listed as a casual, but sometimes do full time hours.. only paid for flying time.. If some of the G.A companies actually paid their pilots for ground time.. they'd go broke..

Cypher.... why don't you just say that the above is you.

And for what's it's worth....both the guys already at Scott Air aren't that happy as one has recently resigned, as I believe it, not because of any unhappy tension in the workplace but for personal reasons. The other donut munching chap is probably quite happy as he moves up the seniority list (if there was one).

Like I said originally, Chris is looking for the "right person" that suits him and his business. I don't the know circumstances of your situation Cypher (aka Zippy) but I also don't think Chris does anything to "dupe" people out of money etc. I've always found him to be a stand up guy who tells it like it is.

Well thats fair enough.. you call it how you see it.. I've just done the same from my point of view..

all I've said was a cautionary advisory.. take it as you will.. Yes it would be a good starting position for someone looking to break into the job market.. I'm just saying be careful..
In no way was I attempting to 'shoot the messenger' if you think that I were implying that...

Does N.Z. have award salaries?

Do the people who pay for the charter of the aircraft used on the freight run know that it's being re/subleased to another party for the purpose of training?
What category is the aircraft operating under during this training - charter, airwork, or training?

And where do YOU fit into the scheme of things, Sqwark? If you aren't this Scott individual, then you do a pretty good job as his PR agent eg. "I've always found him to be a stand up guy who tells it like it is."

How about posting Danny the fee for your blatant advertising!!

I'm sure Mr Scott can afford it out of the money he DOESN'T pay his employees!!

Kaptin M

NZ does not have anything in the way of award wages. I'd say that 75% of flying businesses in NZ don't pay salaries but pure flying pay or daily rates.

I am not Mr Scott, as FLF & Cypher can vouch for. I am currently employed on a scheduled freight with a rare but pretty low salary, I consider myself to be pretty lucky to regular money coming in. Chris & I see each most days and like most aviators...have a natter to catch up on things.

He dosen't NOT pay his employees. He does pay renumeration, but not enough to pay off a mortgage.

The freight run is a one way delivery, therefore, the return sector is a deg-leg and under Part 91 (Private Ops). I don't know the details of the contract obviously but I'd be surprised if it was an exclusive contract.

The original post was not blatant advertising as it did not come from the source direct...in effect making it a RUMOUR, a pretty well confirmed rumour but still a rumour, and there's no lining of my pockets either. Merely a GA aviator helping the other's learn of opportunities around the country

Hope this clears the mud with you Kaptin M

The way the NZ scene is an has been for a long time I would have thought people would be climbing all over eachother to get a job flying even though it is poorly paid.

Sqwark2000, you would kind of look like Mr Scott if you carved up a little and lost that Magnum PI moustauche and boogie nights attire. Still living in the 80's........
