Cool

Well it looks like me old mate Sir Mike "Papa bilong ol" is gonna be top banana again.
Give it six months and all raskols will have a shoeshine stand in Port Morbid and presenting white ladies with hibiscus leis.
You will be able to take a leisurely stroll through Hagen after dark and be greeted with gospel music and the calls of "goodnite masta".
Lae they will strew the roads with frangipani petals on your arrival at the newly re-opened Lae airport and you will be whisked to town in a new clean Toyota.
Your bags will arrive.
You will also notice unusually large squadrons of flying pigs in most places

Vege - if only is were so!!!

I could go to the markets at Koki and Gordons without fear of being held up - not have to take the Glock to the supermarket or to the Airways for a night out. And yes, the supermarkets will be full of fresh and exotic produce, there will be 100,000 resident expats, the power, phones and water will work, we'll all be able to go for picnics at Taurama Beach and for days out at the races at Bomana without a care in the world! Corruption will only apply in other countries, the hospitals will be clean, have medicine and equipment and provide good care, the schools will be world standard, and the kina will be worth USD$1.40, Burns Philp will reopen their department stores and Steamships will no longer be a glorified Trade Store. No doubt Air Nogat will also have a shiny fleet of brand new jets that depart and arrive according to a published schedule, and the house staff won't sell you out to the Raskols!

And.................................the politicians will work fo their people!

So, where will the squadrons of pigs be based? For obvious reasons it will not be the anywhere in the Highlands.

Sad things is it used to be a great place to be where all of the above was reality.

Well - the turmoil will just go on as it always does - and the elections are not yet over. Only reason there is higher profile for all the violence during elections is that there are foreign news crews and observers there during that time so people down here get to hear of it.

Had four good friends and one of my staff murdered there during my last recent stint, and a gun to my own head eleven times. Not a night went past in six years that we didn't hear gunfire - and we lived in a "safe" area!!

Talk to a few of the recent Airlink departures and ask them why they chose to go.

Sorry - but things only get worse not better, and look to get worse if the outcome of the election is what is currently predicted.

Only one candidate for PM had the backing of the World Bank, Australia and ADB, and its not the one who looks like taking power. This means a further downturn in an already depressed economy. Already several large Aid projects ahve been canned. Look at the rate of the kina now - and what it was five years ago -also take into account the high price of everything except cigarettes and coffee!!

A beautiful country in an absolute spiral of decline.

Sad as it has some of the best flying in the world - and used to have the lifestyle to go with it.

When you get there - be careful listen and take note of what people who have been there a long time tell you, it's not just scary stories - it's reality.

On the upside - enjoy the flying - it is spectacular and one one day is the same.

Quashed my dreams!

Thanks for your reply Amelia. I have no idea of what I am getting myself into over there, but I guess I will be there in a week. I have never been there before, so only gather pieces of infirmation from other pilots that have been there. But I gather Madang is one of the better towns.

GA Boy

Email me and I will give you a couple of contacts - one very recent ex Madang, and a couple of others in Moresby, Madang and Lae.

Even Madang is not all it used to be - no longer safe at night and home made shotties are now the norm where as they were the exception until recently. Weapon of choice used to be the bush knife in Madang - "real" weapons like guns were really only obvious in the Highlands, Moresby and Lae.

Our figures show that now days the average stay of an Aussie expat is under one year - used to be 5+. Sign of the times due to the economy, the reduced lifestyle and the appalling AUD/Kina exchange. Rate is now low forties - was one for one until around three years ago - OK for those of us paid in AUD - not so good for those of you on Kina.

Come work in Paradise, get a home made shot gun placed at your head on the way to work, idle gunshots in the night, a local currency on the spiral down, corruption of the highest order from the lowest level to the top. PNG could be a great place, put its like the Titanic going down fast. There is no safe town in PNG dont think for a minute, Madang is safe. It has had just as many problems as the restof the cities. It could of been a fantastic place to live & fly, but it was passed over to the citizens to early.
The general population realise there predicament but can do little, when Ill equiped financially. I have been asked by plenty of PNG citizens if Australia can come back & take over PNG to fix things up! How do you respond to this? Sorry its too late!

The flying is still great, but general life is a concern & care must be taken. At times it can be a trial. But if your keen to have a look come up & see for yourself.

I have to agree with most of the views expressed here. Just sorry I won't be there to raise a glass with G.A. Boy or even quietales, who came up to Port Morbid a while ago. I won't be back in town before 27 August, but hope y'all have fun!

If the latest news on the elections is to be believed ...
