just got back from YMMB,
look like it was on runway 35, news is saying one plane landed on top of the other, I think both planes were on late final. Cant confirm if they were GFS airplanes. Police not saying much.

GFS aircraft, both 172s, I believe. Instructor and student entered the flare, other solo student reportedly landed on top of them. Female solo dead, others in hospital. Both aircraft destroyed in fire.
Sad news, God help them. Condolences to both families.

I wonder if a tower/fire-crash presence might have helped in this case? Was the lack of cover a contributory cause? I'm told the female student had a "busy" work-day - ATPL study in the morning, aerobatic training in the afternoon, followed by night solo flying. That's a lot of work by any standard, I can't help wondering if it was all too much for an inexperienced 19-year old. Any thoughts out there from experienced instructors?

Survivors tried to help pilot: witness
The two survivors of a fatal mid-air collision crawled from the wreckage of their plane and rushed to the the other burning aircraft to try to help, a witness said.
The witness, identified only as Clint from Cheltenham, said he saw the two men in silhouette against the flames engulfing one of the planes after Monday night's crash in south-east Melbourne.
The two planes collided at about 6.30pm (AEST) on Monday just above a runway of Moorabbin Airport during night training exercises.
The pilot of one aircraft, a 19-year-old woman from NSW, died in the crash.
The two occupants of the other plane, the 20-year-old Melbourne pilot and his 24-year-old passenger from NSW, escaped with only cuts and grazes on their hands.
Clint, who was driving past Moorabbin Airport on his way to a soccer match, saw the two planes fly in to land just metres above his car.
He said one plane was on top of another and neither pilot would have been able to see the other.
"They travelled over my car and there were a few sparks, they obviously had clipped about 50 feet or 60 feet on the other side of the fence," Clint told Melbourne's ABC Radio.
"Then I saw a bit of a swivel and the plane from the underneath ... was the one that went tumbling down and went up in a ball of flames and then the other one hit the deck as well, fairly much at the same time."
Clint said he called 000 and alerted emergency services to the crash.
"It just looked like one of the movies, it was just a huge ball of flame, massive, like half the size of a house," he said.
"When the plane went down, if you can imagine a big glow of flame and in the distance, like a silhouette, there was a guy crawling around and a guy running around and they were obviously the people from the other plane that had crashed," he said.
"I did see them run right near the fire. One guy ran right up very close to it - he was a commando. So that was a very good effort by him."
Clint said another plane later flew low over the area and lit up the crash with some sort of spotlight.
Police have said four planes were in a training circuit when the crash happened.
The coroner and the Bureau of Australian Transport Safety Bureau are investigating the accident.

It was a similar circumstance but fortunately with far less tragic ending that forced the hand of ASA to increase the tower hours at Jandakot recently.
I am surprised that given the overwhelming demands from the GA industry (less those who advocated that the tower served nothing better than a good Macdonald's site) that the change was not adopted accross all GAAP airfields.
It is impossible to say that having the tower manned on either of these occasions would have averted the accidents. But surely a review of the overall service, or lack thereof, is now called for.
Condolances to all concerned.
