I've had a pair of Peltors for about six years now and they have never let me down. They can get a bit uncomfortable after a couple of hours continuous wear though and do not, to the best of my knowledge, have a gel seal kit available.

Most of my mates use DCs though and wouldn't have anything else.

Numerous audio probs traced to pilots using non DC headsets, pls do the engineers a favour and stick with DC.

cruncher....one of our planes has probs with DC headsets but no others.... mine are Flightcom, no complaints but Ive only had em 2 yrs. Has gel ear seals and all, no probs in any plane Ive flown and was about half the cost of the DC's.

IMHO dont even consider altronics....all our hire headsets are altronics... i guess you get what you pay for!

12 yr old Dc H10-80, gel seals, ear 'sock's, mic sock.

The only repairs - earlier this year one new speaker ~$120 fitted (dry solder) - New mic sock about two years ago ~$11.

No leaks from ear seals, no compatability probs, and beat the **** out of the co. provided Telex, particularly given years of audio abuse as an instructor, pre headset days, and then islander flying.

I've got a DC 13.4 with ear socks and a ANR kit from Headsets Inc (they are on the web). The ANR kit cost me A$320 and I installed it myself. In total it cost me $800 for a DC with ANR - you cant beat that. Ive had it for a year now...touch wood no troubles. Headsets Inc use good quality parts and so far has been without trouble and the best addition to a standard headset you can make. ANR is gold.

I also have an altronics headset - cost $189 plus some gel ear seals for $40 and that also has been without trouble for 6 years - mind you if you treat it like s*#! then it probably wont last.

Ahhh Claret

Always knew you were a man of good taste, my DC H10-80s with all the fruit are kept in the family safe when not in use.

Great for tuning out all that cockpit noise, mrs woomera and all the woomerettes.

I think I had to sell one of the children when I bought them early '87 but have and continue to give superb service.
BTW the child was returned for refund under the Trade Description Act.

DC seem the way to go.

Price is expensive but you can buy 2nd hand ones in the Trading Post for half the price.

Slightly used but would still be far more superiour then any of the other cheaper brands.

Just a thought....

I used the altronics for my first 5 years flying and about 1100 hours. I quickly replaced the earseals and headband with DC products. Did have 1 small glitch with them after about 10 hours - a quality control problem I suspect - which was fixed within 2 days. Still have them as a spare set. Have since had 2 pairs of DC 10-13XLs which are the luxury model but you do pay for the luxury. The second pair was due to me losing the first pair in a burglary in Melbourne in June 2000 (if anyone has them I don't want them back, but wouldn't mind knowing who sold them to you. Unless you stole them in which case just tell me where you live.)

The company I work for now provides DCs so I tend not to use my own headset, but we would replace a gel seal probably once every 2 months - yukky job. Also the noise cancelling appears to work in exceptionally well in every piston aircraft except the Islander. Haven't tried them in the Aerocommander either, though.

Question

As Cessna Captain says that cost is not a factor, what about an ENC headset.

Anyone have any experience with DC's H10-13X or H10-13XL? For the general aviation pilot, is the added cost of the latter worth it, or will the former suffice for most purposes?

Thanks.

Thumbs up ENC

MLS-12D,

Don't personally have any experience with ENC headsets, but many pilots swear by it ... it's a mini-religion!

If $ is not a problem I would probably spring for one of the DC ENC models (sorry can't help you choose between the 13X and the 13XL).

If DC and Peltor are so beloved by all and sundry why do Sennheiser have a virtual monopoly in 73, 76 & 74 cockpits??
Doesn't Mr Boeing give you a choice?

Because you don't need a David Clark in an airliner cockpit! A lot of noisier regional a/c like the saab most use DCs as well. Sennheisers are pretty much the standard in airliners. Lightweight and good quality.

I've been using DC 10-13X for about 5 years now.
Ive found them to be really good & the noise cancelling is real good, not so much in the little tin cans , but once ya get in the planes with more & bigger engines they cancel alot out.

my only grip is if ya leave the headset on for a couple of days & drain the batteries flat

Thanks Blue Line.

Given your post, it would appear that the 13X is 'good enough' and that the extra $ for the 13XL are not warranted.

Ok had a pair of hd-60 David Clarkes for ten years . Before my present job I decided to purchse something new, so I got a pair of PELTOR STRATOS with anr 9v bat in the ear cup, very light, and compact when stowing etc. Except the anr circuitry is hopeless and supplies no nr at all. DONT BUY A PELTOR! I am going to get my beloved HD-60S back.

Okay, thanks very much for the tip. I was not a fan of Peltors before, and definitely not now!

I'm not familiar with the HD-60. Do you perhaps mean the H10-60? www.davidclark.com/h10-60.htm

I haven't seen the 10-60 but it appears to be a gussied-up 10-13.4 (no ENC) with fancy mike and self-customizing fit.

Glad to hear that it holds up; the place where the frame attaches to the earcups appears rather fragile on DC's website.
