Another vintage air tanker crashes in U.S.
The forest fires in the U.S. are taking a heavy toll.
Overnight a P4Y-2 Consolidated Privateer, which I believe to be N7620C, crashed killing all 3 on board fighting a fire in the Rocky Mountains. This aircraft was built in 1945, and belonged to the same company that owned the Hercules that crashed a few weeks ago, being Greybull, Wyoming based, Hawkins & Powers.
There are early eyewitness reports of the aircraft suffering the same type of catastrophic wing failure of the earlier accident.
The Privateer design was based around the B-24 Liberator, though it had a distinct tall single fin and rudder rather than the twin tail. The fuselage forward of the wing was also 7 ft longer than on the B-24.
