ANZ strike Fallout
Did I fall asleep? Have I just been sleeping? What has just happened at Air NZ? Are Freedom pilots now on the bottom of their (ANZ's) seniority list?
Nice bit of protection for the ANZ boys in case of redundancies? Oh and any further expansion of Freedom is effectively stopped, because now ANZ guys have first crack at any new jobs. That's what you calll a win win situation.
Except the Freedom pilots won't be so happy. Gone are their promotional prospects. Which is why their FO's endure forking over the cash for a type rating and “the lowest B737 salary in the western world (sorry if the quote is not quite verbatim). So again the folks that get screwed are the guys at the bottom of the coal face, trying to get a leg up.
And what of the statement that Freedom will be the recruiting ground for ANZ “The Press, Sat 12th July? Will all new recruits be expected to pay for an A320 rating? Now that's what I call cutting costs!!!!
What a can of worms!

Kid Cpt: very well put. Although I feel bad for the Air NZ pilots, they have spend the last how-ever long bagging the Freedom pilots and the fact that they pay for their own type rating while enjoying all the perks that went with their job that the Freedom crews didn't have (ie superannuation, travel, pay, allowances etc etc).
NOW, their airline is in the crap and all of a sudden Freedom pilots look a little more secure and whoa; look who wants their jobs?!?!?! Good old ALPA, to the rescue of the same people again.....stuff all the rest of the members!

Well it didn't take long did it. For the moaning to start about ANZ going under. Blah blah blah.... BORING!!!!!!
I really wish that if you guys wanted to go on (and on.... and on....) about the AN collapse you'd start your own thread to that effect and leave this one alone.

Kid Capt: I agree that the AN arguement should be put to bed once and for all - and I don't agree that it was ANZ's fault entirely.
I fail to see however that the Freedom expansion cancellation is a win-win situation. Exactly who wins? I doubt if anyone in Freedom thinks that they're winning!
I'm happy that there are no more out-of-work experienced pilots on the market - God knows there's enough already! I do wonder however if it is a win-win situation for all union members involved in the situation............
