Question Commerical Theory HELP :-)

Hi guys, hopefully some of you will be able to help I am currently completing a Bachelor of Science degree at Uni (In Aviation) and have my PPL, NVFR and a Twin Endorsement. On the flying side of things I have no worries what so ever. I have also passed 6 of the 7 Commercial Theory subjects. However I have failed the CPL Aerodynamics Twice (I have since had a small break and brought a few new books based on the cyber exams) I am wondering if this failure is likely to affect me in years to come, eg when I apply for Jobs ect. I understand that QANTAS and the other big airlines must see your CASA Theory Subject History Sheet. And I must admit it is very concerning for me. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your advice

I asked a QF captain this as I failed IREX once and was curious... his response was he had failed IREX 8 times and the FO failed every songle one of his ATPL subjects first go. They now crew 767's at Qantas so to answer your question I guess not!

Thanks for that StormyWX. The worst thing I find, is that I know all the stuff at Uni ect. However it is the ambiguity of some of the CASA questions that I can not get my head around. And both times I have been within 5 % of passing.

Go buy some practise exams, you need to get use to how CASA word their questions and what answers they are looking for... this is even more so as you move into IREX & ATPL. They may be expensive at $40 but its better then having to pay to resit the exam again... they really helped me!

Good Luck, at the end of the day the most important thing to your passengers and company will be that you know your stuff and you can make pratical decisions under pressure.

Cheers

Sean,
The Airlines do not peruse your results at will - however - like most large employers in any industry - they want to see that you have passed the required exams, so it is you as the applicant that has to provide copies of exam results that you have obtained from CASA.

Canuhelp -
Just like the other guys - most of us have had the odd glitch in navigating our way thru the CASA exam system, the end result is to know your job and be motivated. Employers would much rather have a guy/girl who has had a previous fail yet loves what they do and works well with others rather than some person who is gr8 at passing exams but cant fly for %$#%$ or make a decision - so it comes down to you having the results on the day and being the right kind of person for the job.

Good luck - look forward , not back !!!

SS,

Your "History of Exam Results", available from our good friends in the CASA office, shows a list of all aviation exams that you have sat, the dates, and the results (I don't have mine in front of me - I think thats it though). Qantas et al take a bit of a geeza at it as part of their selection process.

CANUHELP

My experience with the CASA exams, albeit prior to the cyber ones, was that the most important point was to Read The F****** Question. This was at least half the battle.

What you are looking for is the one word or phrase which is the clue as to what the question is about. For example, does the question use the word "height" or "altitude".

My memory of the commercial exams is a bit dim now but I still have the shudders over some of the IREX questions. One in particular which was in a practice exam was for a flight BNE to SSY and gave an ETA for a particular day of the week. It then gave you a massive TAF with all kinds of horrors and an alternate that was a specific flight time away.

The question asked how much fuel was required over the statutory and variable minimum. After working away at this for some time, the answer was zero, but the clue to the whole thing was that the ETA nominated a day. A quick check in the AIP Jepp volume showed that holding fuel was required. The TAF was just a blind.

I have been hearing some disquietning things about the cyber exams (not least that they seem designed to extract money) but I hope you have success with them soon. Best of luck.

Cool Practice CPL exams?

Stormywx,

You mentioned the idea of purchasing practice CPL exams for $40 each. I may not have searched the CASA well enough but all I could find there was a five question on-line famil exam.

From where would I purchase these practice exams? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Cheers, G

I can assure you "canuhelp" as long as you ultimately pass them all no one cares about your CPL results. If you have an ATPL/CPL ( depending on the requirement of the employer ) that's all they care about. Each airline has their own methods to determine your suitability and your CASA exam results are not part of it at the moment.
