Average time to get that first instructing job

Got my initial Grade 3 two weeks ago.

Have rung around everywhere and it appears there is nothing out there at the moment. Just wondering how long it takes to get that first job???

It seems it will just be a matter of luck to get one. In the right place at the right time, or making that phone call when a school needs an instructor.

Am not whinging, just eager to put the thousands of dollars to good use. Like the many others out there.

Also, it seems that as spring/summer approaches the jobs will become more available, what time of yr does this usually occur? Early Spring??

New tactic hey pa28captain

Instead of calling up schools for jobs why not bring your own students. A school is never going to say no to fresh students.

Just a thought!

Got my first Instructing job within a week of finishing the rating.
Wasn't at the school I trained at either.....

I did have over 1000 hrs at the time

And I did it because I really wanted to Instruct, not just build hours.

Got my job full time within two weeks of finishing the rating. Was at the school I'd done all my training with tho. I think that helps.

Unhappy

I completed my instructor rating in 1994, renewed it twice but NEVER found any instructing work. Out of the 6 of us on the course back then, at least 2 of us never ended up doing instructing, though the good thing is all of us on the course eventually got a flying job. Some sooner than others (from immediately after the course to up to 5 years after).

Hi pa28,
The length of time it takes to get your first instructing job is really in your hands. Making phone calls is not the best approach. The best thing to do is front up in person. Go out to your local aerodrome and introduce yourself to all operaters, even if they're not flying schools. Be enthusiastic and willing to do any odd jobs that my be on offer. Once you become known in your local aviation community and you have proven your zest and willingness to succeed, you will be surprised what comes your way. It worked for me many years ago.
The thing with aviation is to make opportunities for yourself, because no one else will.
Good luck.

Angry I was lucky....

When I signed up for my course I was left under no misconceptions that there was no job at the end of the course. I had infact taken leave of absence from my job with the intention of going back afterwards.

However, about 1/2 way through the course, the owner of the school called me in to his office and offered me a full-time salaried position. All I was worried about was how to go back and resign from a company that was good enough to give me the time off to do the training.

Those were the days......
