Air Niugini CEO resigns

Wed "Australian Financial Review" Late News 19/6/02

Air Niugini CEO resigns

AAP

The Australian chief executive of Papua New Guinea's government airline Air Niugini has resigned.

Brisbane-born Peter Roberts said he chose to leave his contract 15 months early because he was not given enough control over the airline.

"I suppose when you're not really controlling the agenda it's time to go," Roberts said.

Roberts, who is a leading figure in South Pacific aviation, denied allegations the Air Niugini board had asked him to leave.

PNG newspaper The National reported the board had demanded the resignation.

The newspaper said this was because of disquiet about alleged financial losses on the direct Sydney-Port Moresby route.

It said that the PNG airline workers' union had criticised Roberts's management, in particular because of the direct connection to Sydney.

Until February, Air Niugini had a code-share agreement with Australian flag carrier Qantas Airways. The airlines are still debating whether to make a new agreement.

Qantas had looked into buying part of Air Niugini in March last year.

It's called TANGFU...Typical Air Niugini F**K Up.

Whenever there is an Expat Manager the PNG Unions whinge constantly.

That's because 80% of them are stealing the place blind and expat management make it harder to do. As a National it is nearly impossible to get sacked...not even for gross negligence or theft...You'd be amazed however how many National staff are on 'permanent' suspension on full pay!

And in between each Expat GM there is usually a Papuan or New Guinean who steals the place blind as well...but the national unions usually have very little to say about that!

The attitude of 90% of the national staff is that PX exists as a cradle to grave social security service...into which they have to put no effort.

The attitude of the Govt is that it's a cash cow that can be milked unto death.

Very sad way to see a once proud symbol of SW Pacific Nationhood end up.

Chuck.

Unhappy

Another Expat CEO bites the dust.
We could have told him before he went that he would face obstruction, personal denigration, and down right dishonesty by Politicians and staff who resented close scrutiny of their disgraceful theiving from the coffers of a once proud airline.
Spanish practices abound and in fact are the norm.
Dieter Seefeld, despite what you may think of him, was a brilliant commercial man who let these things fly over his head.
I fear that some ar$ehole of a polly may now get the job and tighten the spiral downwards some more. In fact, the more I think of it, it's a racing certainty.
